A Lightning Trial, also known as Lightning Tribulation or Core Formation, is a pivotal event that occurs when an individual transitions from one step or realm of cultivation to another, particularly significant for Surakans as they ascend to the next level of their cultivation journey. Unlike Mortals, Surakans have the agency to choose when they undergo Core Formation, typically when they are ready to break into the next realm of cultivation.
During a Lightning Trial, the individual’s cultivation of Qi is transformed into lightning strikes, which manifest as a test of their resilience and latent talent. Throughout this trial, the individual is confined within a one-meter radius from the tip of their fingers to the edge of their arm’s length, rendering them vulnerable to external attacks.
Each lightning strike carries exponentially increasing power, with the intensity doubling with every subsequent strike. The number of strikes received during the trial varies based on the individual’s ability to withstand them and their inherent talent. Those who endure between 1 to 4 strikes are deemed to have an inferior core, while receiving 5 to 7 strikes is considered good. Strikes numbering 8 and 9 are exceedingly rare, while 10 and 11 are exceptionally uncommon, even among the most powerful cultivators. Achieving 12 strikes is regarded as near impossible and has been observed only once on Sarakù during a standard Lightning Trial.

Unlike traditional core formation where a singular core is cultivated, Dual Core Formation yields the development of an additional core alongside the primary one. Typically, the secondary core is slightly weaker than the primary core, although instances of equal strength have been recorded. Individuals blessed with Dual Cores often possess unparalleled strength and abilities compared to those with singular cores. Despite extensive research and study, the origin and reason behind the manifestation of Dual Cores remain shrouded in mystery, confounding scholars and cultivators alike.

True Lightning Trial
True Lightning Trials are different from normal Lightning Trials, primarily due to the protective energy field that deflects all attacks towards the individual achieving this feat. When this True Trial happens, the energy field extends into the sky, appearing with a golden hue. The swirling clouds above signify the presence of this energy shield, visible for hundreds of kilometers. In the middle of this cloud, protected by the energy shield, lies the Golden Core. While in a normal Lightning Trial, the Core produced is called a Golden Core, in a True Lightning Trial, a True Golden Core is formed.
Around the start of the lightning trial, when the energy field shoots up to the swirling clouds above, an energy pulse is emitted to the surrounding area, indicating the commencement of a True Lightning Trial.
The operations of a True Lightning Trial differ from a normal one. Instead of enduring 12 strikes, the individual faces only 9. These 9 strikes are more perilous as each strike, squared by the previous one, bears the weight of life-and-death tribulations. Thus, a True Lightning Trial exacts a more devastating toll on its user. Additionally, the Heavenly Path of Foundation Establishment’s unique Heavenly Path Qi triggers these Nine Heavenly Lightning Strikes during Core Formation.
